I remember one of the things that you said to us in your feedback was that it is unusual to have such a positive experience with a group project. I thought about that too and I wondered what about our group ended up with us being so successful. I think that part of it comes from what we have learned working on these various projects in this class. We each knew our strengths and weaknesses going into the project so there was no one playing hero to take on all the roles or trying to dump anything off. Also a lot of it comes from our own maturity. We are older and know responsibility better so the experience works really well. This was true in both of our group projects.
One of the biggest things I’ve noticed about the Education department since I’ve become a part of it is how excited students are about the process of education. So when I was reading a book about education changing and the direction it was headed in the future I could not help but to think about my peers. Once thinking about them I knew that I wanted to get actual students in the video and show their industry and energy. I think that grounded my video exactly the way I wanted and conveyed the message that we are actively working towards those future possibilities. I did want the video to be natural so I did it mostly guerilla style and was pleased with the results.
It would be easy for someone to mistake meaning for definition and think that they were supposed to figure out how to define something in a new way but instead the meaning referred to here is having meaning to someone or the meaning it holds to society. If l look to what holds meaning for me, what I am grateful I peruse over the obvious things like being alive and being healthy because none of those have meaning to me without my family. I am grateful for a mother and father that have supported me through the years and given me the room to make mistakes and take my time in the pursuit of becoming the person that I want to be. I am grateful for my sisters. My older sister who doesn’t know it but is a role model to me in her thoroughness and preparedness. I am grateful for a twin sister who is like a distorted mirror of my own self who has always been willing to fight for me whether I noticed I needed defending or not. I am thankful for the nieces and nephews that have been given to me. I do not know whether I will have my own children or not but as long as my nieces and nephew are around I know they will continue to be miracles and carry on our family line. They surprise me every time around them. They help give my life meaning. They are wonderful and beautiful children that are growing up so fast, intelligent, and brave. I am grateful that I can bear witness to all of it.
My strengths to help me with engagement in meaning have to be independence and creativity. These have long been the tools I find solace and meaning in but sometimes I turn away from them afraid to be brave and questioning the endurance that I have for standing alone. If I am ever going to find a true meaning and purpose in my life through I cannot be afraid to rely on my independence or pursue my creative endeavors. I have to write stories that force people to keep turning pages when they mean to go to sleep. I have to write the poems that will make people have those moments of clarity or moments where their eyes well up with tears. For me that is where the engagement and meaning has always been and that is when I have felt most complete.
I think the challenge of bring peace, prosperity for all, or sustainability is a big challenge but one has to not think about how big it is and think about all the little ways that in can be contributed to. Use your creativity to find ways to improve your neighborhood. Reward kids for can drives. Start community gardens. Work at food banks, donate your time and your money but also talk to people and tell them what is going on. Make people understand that there are people in the world that are suffering from the inequities of life and we need to decrease the discrepancy. We have to carry a message that if one man is suffering then all men are suffering because we are one people.
In going about my project this time I took the 360 aspect of it really seriously so before anything else I wanted to make sure that I covered the information thoroughly and then try to be creative from that point. That may have been my downfall because I got so many critiques about having too much to read and the slides going too fast. This kind of bothered me because I did spend time lengthening the slides because I got this complaint before. I don’t just sit back and do the same thing and not take note of my criticisms. I chose no narration because I felt like I would be reading over slides that had nothing to do with the information that I was talking about at the moment and when I tried to do slide by slide narration I was not successful at it. I really tried hard with this project and tried to make it creative as well as informative but from the feedback I didn’t come close enough to what I was hoping for.
To me empathy is the ability to feel an approximation of the feelings of another. This can be easily done with someone who is of the same culture as you or it can require you to stretch yourself emotionally and mentally by trying to empathize with a person outside of your culture. Obviously this is different because your experiences in life often times are very different.
Once a person is able to empathize well then they are able to assimilate emotions and experiences of other people this gives them the ability to create something different than they might have. Take for instance an artist that has only known life one way and the suddenly he is able to see the world in a different light. Imagine this new perspective and the new things that will come as a result of it. Empathizing opens whole new worlds and ideas that can be expressed and can act as the fertile ground for creativity.
Empathy can lead to a human revolution because people are able to understand the plight of other people. Just like we watched in the first video when people of Britain were made to understand the plight of slaves and the slave traded ended and eventually slavery was done for the same can be done about many other world issues. The video hinted at workers in sweatshops but also we can use empathy to understand those who struggle with hunger or don’t have clean drinking water. There are a world of issues out there that people don’t comprehend of understand yet but with a little empathy they might and maybe we can finally get something done about them.
Credit definitely must be given for the title to Say Anything one of my favorite bands who have a song of the same name. I was slightly worried at the beginning of the lesson about metaphor and how I would represent it but as someone who writes I should have been worried less. That does not come from a cock frame of mind either. It comes from having the knowledge that in metaphor one thing represents another. As long as you have an idea in your head of how something can be symbolic of another thing you at least have a good start. So it was when it came time to work on my project. I spent a good amount of time agonizing about what I would choose. I didn’t want to choose work that was really long and have the project be exhaustive and potentially boring and I don’t know art so that was out of the question. The problem with doing fairy tales is that they are nice and they do have a good message but they feel exactly what they are, childish. That is what lead me to settle on the quote that I did. It held meaning for me that was translatable to other people’s lives. It was succinct but powerful as well. I had big ideas about what I wanted to accomplish and knew it would take more involvement than some of my previous works for campus. I poured into Gimp tutorial’s so that I could gain the tools I needed and got one of my classes to lend a hand. In the end it came out a great success in my mind and looked even better than I thought it would.
Metaphor in a sense is how we make sense of the unknown. It is how we lasso the moon in the sky and pull it down to our level so that we might understand it or do the inverse and project it so that it is bigger than we are. Take these two metaphors for instance: The moon shines like a distant streetlight calling the neighborhood kids to come home for dinner or the her smile was a bright as the moon on a clear sky night, illuminating all the dark parts of my heart. We use it to define the unknown apply scale to things or just to be imaginative in the was we are describing things. Without the use of metaphor the world can be suddenly boring and that is not what we want do we?
The creative inquiry is the steps along which our perception of the world goes till we come out the other end with an ability to manipulate and make sense of all the stimuli the world has to offer. Once mastered we are better at communicating, pattern making, and complex intellectual functions.
Sweeter than honey!
